A soldier from Earth crashlands on an alien world after sustaining battle damage. Eventually, he encounters another survivor, but from the enemy species he was fighting. They band together to survive on this hostile world. In the end, the human finds himself caring for his enemy in a completely unexpected way. In the distant future, as the galaxy is being colonized, humanity goes to war against the Dracs, a reptilian race from the planet Draco as both races fight over the control of many worlds. During a space battle, space pilot Willis Davidge crashes on Fryine IV, a volcanic planet. Willis finds he isn't alone and finds a Drac named Jeriba Shigan has also crashed on the planet. Both stranded on Fryine IV, Both Davidge and Jeriba both put aside their differences and their hatred for each other as they both try to survive on the planet, where they learn of each other's cultures and form a friendship. I just saw Enemy Mine (smart title) for the first time this evening. I missed the battleship fighting scene and crashed on the planet at the same time Dennis and Louis did, because I missed the first 10 minutes and tho I don't like to see pieces of film, I was this time tied up to the screen. Immediately, unsettled by the the poor quality of makeups, sets, dialogs, and acting, I thought I had found there a good laughable material.

But Petersen material - I saw that in the TV guide. So I tried to keep focused. And if you're able to catch the tale behind the poor technical aspects, you'll enjoy the film because the characters are somewhat touching. They're very simplistic, sure, but without ungracious notes. They're solid, and the message about human condition, altruism and respect is refreshing. Most of all, the liberty of the plot construction. It's something missing so much in recent or heavy productions, which always feel the need to edit action sequences ubiquitously all over the film length to keep the viewer entertained. So watch this movie if you're a truly sc-fi fan, not if you're looking for hot action or fx.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that if it's a good film, underrated - may even you feel proud to have discovered it somewhere on your dusty video store or in a late telecast, it's not a gem neither. Stay wise! The technical level of the film is very poor, sometimes the quotes ridiculous, and the sc-fi themes skeletal : you could find them in rendered, multidimensional & motion shape into Starship Troopers, ET, Aliens, Star Wars, V, Planet of the Apes, Lion King, Titan AE, and Cast Away.

Rating: 7/10. I loved this movie when it came out. I was only a kid at the time, but now I can truly appreciate the film much more. I'm not a big sci fi fan, but the thing about this movie is this, it's not all sci fi. The film is a touching reminder that inside, we're basically all the same. Two people from different races, different species in fact, become very close friends and find a connection people of the same race cannot find sometimes. The special effects in this movie are not the best, but they go a long way to make the movie exciting for those into big action scenes. The acting is superb, and the scenery is just awesome. Gossett Jr. is just too cool as the alien. Love this movie! One more thing tho, it says in trivia that the movie was shot in Hungary, I think. But it lists the film as being made in Germany? Confused. ALso, why no dvd yet?! Agh!
